INSTANT MATCHPOINT GAME IN SEPTEMBER

On Thursday evening of September 16, a special game will be held at the senior center beginning at 6:30pm.  The cost is $5 per person.  The top pair in each direction will win 1 gold point.  All other high-point awards are half red and half black.  More details can be found here.

We ask that people sign up for this event since the hands need to be pre-made.  Please send an e-mail to ncbridge@gmail.com identifying your partnership if you intend to play.

A very special method of scoring is used for the Instant Matchpoint Pairs, a rare event—it is run annually by the ACBL.  Identical hands are played throughout the ACBL. As soon as the hand is played, the players can learn their Instant Matchpoint result by looking at the traveling score.  All hands are scored in advance.  A good-looking program book is distributed to all players at the conclusion of the game in which each and every hand is thoroughly analyzed by an expert.

Starting July 1, 2010, only one charity game per month.

ACBL has chosen to limit the number of charity/jr fund/international fund games that can be offered in non-designated months to one each month.  Furthermore, the payout for these games will now be 70% of what it was in the past.

We will still offer as many high point games as allowed:

  • One club championship per quarter

  • STaC games

  • one membership game per year

  • two NAP games in each of June, July and August

  • Junior fund games in all of the designated month of February

  • Charity games in all of the designated month of April

  • International fund games in all of the designated month of September

  • One club appreciation pair and one club appreciation team game in October

  • One charity game per month in each non-designated month

Even running the 38 special games we are allowed, 14 weeks remain where we will run old-style games.  The point awards for these regular games may be shockingly low for some of our newer members.  Brace yourselves!!!

Also, we will have to adjust our scheduled games for the latter half of 2010.  We will announce when these are available.

Greenville Area Bridge Club players excel in District 7 Competition

(by Fred Lavin)

Many Greenville regulars finished 2009 in the top 15 of the District 7 (North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and western Tennessee) standings in the Ace of Clubs  and Mini-McKinney competitions.  The Ace of Clubs includes points won at the local club level in competitions where only black points are awarded.  The Mini-McKinney race includes all master points won at any level during the year and rewards those who compete often at the Sectional and Regional levels.  Both contests are stratified according to the number of points a person has at the start of each calendar year.

Nancy Boyd  finished 2nd in the Ace of Clubs and 3rd in the Mini-McKinney in the 200-300 MP category.  Ron Woodsum was 2nd in the Ace of Clubs and 10th in the McKinney in the 7,500-10,000 section.

In the 300-500 competition, Ben Harrison finished 3rd in the Ace of Clubs and 8th in the Mini-McKinney field.  Mary Jane Jenkins came in  4th and 3rd respectively in the 0-50 division of those races.

Cindy Suter racked up enough MPs to finish 4th in the Ace of Clubs and 11th in the Mini-McKinney in the 20-50 MP section..

Meanwhile, in the 500-1000 MP division, Fred Lavin was 5th in the Ace of Clubs and 7th in the Mini-McKinney, while his regular partner, Chris Carolan, was 8th and 11th, respectively.  Tudi Moldestad tied for 13th in the Mini-McKinney race for that category.

Finally, Vivian Woodsum came in 12th in the 2500-5000 division of the Ace of Clubs.

ALERT !!!  Structure of the Saturday games

The last quarter of 2009 saw the addition of a novice side game on Saturdays.  Unfortunately, these games tended to have low participation.  We have decided to implement the following policy:

ANY SATURDAY WHERE 4 OR MORE TABLES WANT TO PLAY IN A NOVICE GAME:

  • we will have a novice side game with strats C = 0-100, B = 100-200, A = 200-300 and they will play 24 boards.

  • the open game will have strats C = 0-750, B = 750-1500, A = 1500+

ANY SATURDAY WITH INSUFFICIENT DEMAND FOR A NOVICE GAME:

  • the open game will have strats C = 0-NLM, B = NLM-1250, A = 1250+, thus allowing those that wanted to play in the novice game to play in the open game in a low strat.

Current Status of and MAP to the new Senior Center!

All duplicate bridge games in Greenville have been moved to the new Senior Center.  This includes the Monday afternoon, Tuesday evening, Wednesday morning, Wednesday afternoon, Saturday afternoon, and the occasional Sunday afternoon games.  We will have the entire multipurpose room available to us on each of these occasions.  Given we are being given such a large playing area, let's try and fill it up!  See you at the tables.

The address is 4551 County Home Road, across from the Animal Shelter.  An interactive map is available here: MAP.
